Mr Self trained in medicine at the University of Melbourne graduating in 1980. He worked as a hospital Resident and Registrar at St Vincent’s Hospital, Prince Henry’s Hospital, Monash Medical Centre Melbourne. He graduated as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in General Surgery in 1993. He spent a year as a General Surgical Consultant at Monash Medical Centre in 1994.

Since 1995 his practice has been restricted to Vascular Surgery. He underwent a 2 year training programme of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Vascular Surgery with a year at the
Royal Perth Hospital and a year at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne.

Additional overseas experience was obtained at Vancouver General Hospital, Vancouver, Canada and at Guy’s Hospital, London, UK. He returned to Melbourne in 1998 and commenced Specialist Vascular Surgical practice.

Currently he has a Vascular Surgical practice based in Richmond with satellite consulting. For many years he has maintained a public hospital practice at Southern Health (Monash Medical Centre and Dandenong Hospital).
